The Rhone and its crossing places... a place of privilege. And the
spirit of privilege transpires from the architectural style in the area.
The castle and private mansions in Beaucaire, a town where fairs and markets
have been held ever since the Middle Ages; the papal Chartreuse at Villeneuve
lez Avignon, the Florentine monuments of Avignon's twin from the
Gard, and last but not least, the spectacular bridge that gave its name
to the town of Pont Saint Esprit.

The Rhone Valley is, of course, a garden of wine. This part of the Gard
is the heart of the Côtes du Rhône, with clusters of vineyards
all along the fertile river banks: Tavel, Laudun, Chusclan or Roquemaure,
already a wine trading town in the 16th century.
